“I think we have to have dreams…we need a little Carmen Miranda with all her tutti frutti hats. And we need some Fred and Ginger dancing. We need Gene Kelly hanging off that lamppost. We need to be taken into a fantasy world, and not be afraid to go there occasionally.”

Robert Osborne was  –  is  –  so, SO right and millions  –  billions  –  of us have so much to thank him for, for keeping great movies alive, for putting them in front of us, movies which might otherwise have been forgotten, movies we might otherwise not have seen and Robert, in so doing, has allowed us to spend time in other worlds.

Sure, movies can have educational purposes, they can inform, they can raise awareness of events and conditions of which we are ignorant but, for me, on the whole, the movies exist to entertain us, to allow us to escape from ourselves, our lives, our worlds for a short time (music also does that for me  –  some books, too)  –  what a great escape during The Great Depression and WWII!!

Louis B. Mayer, Irving Thalberg, Edith Head, George Lucas, Billy Wilder, Bernard Herrmann, Steven Spielberg et al., these great people constructed these other worlds, created the stars, turned them into mythical figures…Robert Osborne gave his life to bringing these worlds, the stars, the mythical figures to us…

A few great movie escapes:

Roald Dahl, dreadful man but credit where credit’s due…

One of my favourites (thanks, Billy Wilder!)

Marvin Hamlisch  –  GENIUS!

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!

More Marvin Hamlisch brilliance…

I keep returning here…

Not sure why I included this…not exactly a place we want to escape to…but the love, so palpable, so beautiful…

Quite simply, exquisite! They appear to float…

George Sanders  –  that magical voice!

Sublime!

CLASSIC ESCAPISM…

One of my favs!!!

Love ‘Niv’:

and on and on and on and on….

Thank you, Robert Osborne  –  a life devoted to keeping the movies alive is a life well worth living!!
