So I thought I’d watch ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ tonight – I was NOT expecting that!! I was prepared for some serious acting, I knew it was a classic, I knew it had some of the big Oscars and Oscar Nominations to its name, I wasn’t expecting a light, easy-going movie but that intensity, the acting, Vivienne Leigh sending chills up my spine, no, I was not expecting that kind of experience! I was frozen to the spot, aghast, when it finished.
Melodrama? For sure…bordering on horror! I must watch ‘A Place in the Sun’ – George Stevens won the Best Director Oscar and some movie it must be to have left Elia Kazan without the Oscar. Thank goodness Vivienne Leigh won the Best Actress Oscar for her staggering portrayal of Blanche Dubois – up there with the best acting I have ever seen! Unfortunately for Marlon Brando, he was up against Bogie (The African Queen) but what an actor (Marlon, that is, but, yes, Bogie, too)!! One of my favs, Kim Hunter, she won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Blanche’s sister, Stella – well deserved (I am biased – I loved her as June in ‘A Matter of Life and Death’). Karl Malden, Best Supporting Actor for his part as ‘Mitch’, again, well deserved – a very different role than that of Detective Lieutenant Mike Stone in the classic ‘Quinn Martin Production’, ‘The Streets of San Francisco’!! (I can’t mention ‘The Streets of San Francisco’ without mentioning ‘Quinn Martin Production’ – nostalgia, I guess).
Well, there it is…very pleased with my movie choice this evening – ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’: what an astounding piece of work!!
